Last month I started saving kitchen scraps for compost in my one-bedroom place. The first bin got smelly and fruit flies appeared after about a week. I switched to a plain lidded plastic bucket with a tight seal, added shredded newspaper or dry leaves with every batch of peels and coffee grounds, and kept it on the counter until it was full enough to empty into the outdoor pile. No bugs since, and the smell stays away if I don’t let it sit wet. What do you do when flies show up in a small kitchen compost bucket?
