How to mend canvas tote without adjacent seam pulling?

I tried mending the hole in my favorite canvas tote with heavy thread after reading about fixing things instead of replacing them. It held up fine for the market run, but the seam next to the repair started pulling apart right away. What’s a better way to reinforce the mend so the surrounding seams don’t give out next?

The heavy thread probably just shifted all the stress right next to the mend. Next time back the repair with a scrap of similar fabric on the inside and stitch through everything so the load spreads out instead of tearing the next seam.

Tried a quick inside patch with what I had on hand but the extra layer just bunched up when I carried anything heavy. The seam’s still giving way on that side.
