How to handle supply runs when carpools don't align?

The distance is about 18 miles each way, and the main road has enough elevation change that fuel use on my older sedan jumped noticeably when I had to go solo. Tried adjusting departure by 30 minutes to catch one of the others heading out, but their return windows didn’t overlap with what I needed for the hardware store stop. Not sure how others are bridging those gaps without adding more single-occupancy miles.
