Why did invasives fill my unused acres instead of staying open?

I expected the unused acres on the new property to stay mostly open and self-regulating if left alone, but they filled in with invasives instead. Walking the perimeter first showed scattered seedlings along the old fence rows. Moving inward, the ground cover thinned where previous disturbance had left bare patches. Checking a few spots, the faster-growing plants had already shaded out what was trying to come back naturally. I pulled a test section by hand to see whether that changed the pattern at all.

Hand pulling that test section will only slow the spread if the roots get yanked too. Most invasives bounce back from fragments left in the soil.

Hand pulling misses the point once those fragments are in the soil, just like offgridoliver said. For patches that size, laying down cardboard then a thick mulch layer starves the roots without chemicals and gives native stuff a chance to come back. It takes a season or two but beats constant weeding.
